Shale gas could contribute $118 billion to the U.S. economy in the next four years

Natural gas from shale is expected to create 870,000 U.S. jobs and add $118 billion to the U.S. economy over the next four years, according to a new report by IHS Global Insight. It is also expected to contribute $933 billion in taxes over the next 25 years.

A report by the American Chemistry Council estimates 25% growth in the shale gas industry could create over 400,000 jobs and contribute $4.4 billion in federal, state and local revenue.

But environmental groups like Food and Water Watch say these job estimates are way off-base. Referring to a Public Policy Institute of New York state study that said 500 shale gas wells in five counties could create 62,620 jobs, the Food and Water watch said to Bloomberg, that after correcting the job multiplier, the wells were expected to create only 6,656 jobs.
