Still, when it comes to judging mutual funds, a great deal of weight is often put on historical performance. Standard & Poor's Equity Research thinks there's a better way. Last fall, the firm launched its new Mutual Fund Ranking methodology. S&P is combining its various research offerings, along with a bevy of fund data to rank funds.

The firm has some eye-opening numbers to share with investors. For instance, among large-cap mutual funds in the top quartile of performance from 2003 to 2006, only 13% of those funds repeated the outperformance in the following three years. Small-cap and mid-cap funds were slightly more consistent but hardly reliable, with just 27% and 21% of those fund categories, respectively, posting repeat performances.
